San Francisco's RocketSpace accelerator has named Karl Knight as its new president and chief financial officer. Knight was previously the managing director of Recurrent Energy and before that was CFO at Regenesis Power. Knight joins CEO Duncan Logan, COO Todd Elsberg, CRO (chief revenue officer) Eryc Branham on RocketSpace's management team. That's a lot of chiefs. Knight will be responsible for RocketSpace’s finances and strategy.

November has been an outstanding month for UK's Birmingham Science Park. Earlier in the month BSP successfully hosted the LAUNCH gaming conference. Last week it celebrated its 30th anniversary (click here to see our special coverage of that event).

We thought there was already an incubator for everything. We were wrong. Last week, the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency formally announced that it's setting up a technology incubator to help it prepare to fight cyber battles in real-time as part of a program called Plan X. It's fair to say that this will be very different from your neighborhood incubator.

Nine (yes 9!) FounderFuel accelerator alumini startups are headed to the Valley soon to spend 3 months --with free office space-- at either RocketSpace  in San Francisco or Plug and Play Center in Sunnyvale. Ian Jeffrey and his team at Montreal-based FounderFuel worked this out with the Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA), which is part of Canada's Trade Commisioner Service. The deal is that FounderFuel will get to send up to three teams per cohort --but since FounderFuel has already graduated 3 classes, they get to send 3 each from those ones, too. Two of those startups have already made their arrangments: Appifier will be going to RocketSpace in the new year and NoteSolution will be headed to Plug and Play.

The UK's Birmingham Science Park (BSP) is celebrating its 30th birthday today. [UPDATE: click here to see photos of the big party]. When you consider that 30 years is several lifetimes in tech years, it's truly an accomplishment worth celebrating. What's remarkable is how BSP has stayed close to its high tech and entrepreneurial roots while it grew to be one of the country's leading science parks. Today there will be a huge 'neon-themed' party at BSP with over 350 people attending. To mark this event, The Accelerator Gazette conducted a series of interviews with people in the BSP community. We spoke with Tech-ni-Plant (one of the first tenants), wallFour (one of the newest), and Dr. David Hardman, BSP's Chief Executive Officer. Here's what they had to say about life at BSP.

Ryerson University, based in Toronto Canada, has launched the Innovation Centre for Urban Energy (i-CUE). Located at Ryerson's Centre for Urban Energy, i-CUE is Canada’s first business incubator and accelerator devoted solely to urban energy. Its goal is to help energy start-ups turn their ideas into commercial products and services. There are currently four companies at i-CUE: Energy Savers, Plug’n Drive Ontario, DanTeb Enterprises and Grid Resources.

Just as they had promised, the Global Accelerator Network (GAN) has started posting data about each of its members. It is a big step forward. Critical point: you need to go to their new URL, gan.co, to see the data (the old URL http://globalacceleratornetwork.com/ is still alive, but you need to go to the new URL to see the data).

On the weekend, Patrick Riley of the Global Accelerator Network announced on GAN's blog that  GAN will begin rolling out "honest, reliable and transparent data" about the performance of its members on Wednesday, November 14.

Chile is making big waves in the global startup community by re-writing the rules for seed accelerators. Some very forward thinking people in Chile decided to attract high quality startups from all over the world (for example, with $40k equity-free money) and to make it insanely easy to move to and work in the country. The way they did it was to create Startup Chile, something we've written about several times before. QA on Request, from Montreal Canada, was one of the companies accepted into Startup Chile's most recent cohort. Simon Papineau took some time to send us this email about his experiences in his first three weeks there, and we thought we'd share it with you. There are a few new faces at Ann Arbor SPARK. The non-profit organization, which helps businesses at all stages from startups to large organizations, has hired two new managers and has promoted another.

Jake Elbers is now the manager of the SPARK East business incubator, where he’ll oversee day-to-day operations.

Regular readers of The Accelerator Gazette will know that we're big fans of Ryerson University's Digital Media Zone, one of the highest energy and most creative incubators around. We thought you'd like to read this post written by one of their startups, Tapgage, pictured here (l-r: Arfan Chaudhry, Gurjit Legha and Salman Habib). One of the reasons we like this article is that it shows off the high degree of creativity at the Zone. You've read (and forgotten) way too many articles about "5 Lessons for This", or "6 Ideas for That" that all say the same thing. This is not one of those articles. The Tapgage folks have written about 81 actionable ideas for their field.

Just when it looked like the problems at Taiwan's science parks couldn't get any worse, they did. Now there's a fight brewing between the Taiwanese government and courts. A few weeks ago we reported that a Taiwanese court had halted the development of the 4th phase of the Central Taiwan Science Park because of environmental issues. The 4th phase is also known as the "Erlin Park" (see "Major setback for Central Taiwan Science Park"). One would think that a court ruling to stop the project. Not in Taiwan.

AngelPrime, an incubator based in Bangalore India, has just received a major investment from a well know Silicon Valley fund. The Mayfield Fund said it would take a majority investment in AngelPrime. The amount of the investment was not disclosed but Reuters reports that the overall fund run by AngelPrime would total less than $10 million. Mayfield already had a team focusing on Indian comprised of  Navin Chaddha, Robin Vasan, and James Beck.  Three of AngelPrime's founding partners (Bala Parthasarathy, Shripati Acharya and Sanjay Swamy) were founders of Snapfish, a former Mayfield portfolio company, so both parties know each other well.
