Tough Times in Taiwan Science Parks

Hsinchu Science Park HQ source Wikipedia

The revenue at Taiwan's three largest research and science parks is dropping according to a recent article in Focus Taiwan. The year-over-year decline was 7.24% which is pretty significant by any standard. The article attributes this to the troubled European economy and the slow US recovery.

The Central Taiwan Science Park had the most severe hit, with sales falling 11.21%. Hsinchu Science Park (headquarters pictured here; source Wikipedia) fell 8.14 percent and Southern Taiwan Science Park fell 3.52 percent.

Your editor has been to Hsinchu Science Park many times. It's a very significant operation and declines this large have to hurt badly. In spite of this bad news, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and United Microelectronics Corp. have continued to invest in new plants in the parks.
